A Friday night on the West end of the city, rock fans made their way into Toronto’s Axis Club for a night of pure rock ‘n’ roll magic. Piling towards the front of the stage, everyone squeezed into the 600-capacity venue.
Kicking off the show were Canadian natives, the innovative and unique Mountain Head. Made up of the dynamic Hannah Brothers, Kyle (bass guitar) and Ben (lead vocals and guitar), accompanied by Kevin Farmer on drums, Mountain Head had everyone in the audience captivated from start to finish.
Blending the likes of psych-rock, alternative rock and pop, Mountain Head delivered a performance with perfect harmonies and top-notch musicianship. Their energy was captivating and had the audience loudly cheering after every song. Pumping up the crowd perfectly for Danko Jones and definitely gaining some new fans.
Danko Jones took the stage with an iron fist, the crowd chanting “Danko” in excitement. “Guess who’s back? Me, motherfucker! Take your best shot, cause I don’t give a damn” Danko sang into the mic, starting off the set with the opening track, ‘Guess Who’s Back’, off their latest album, ‘Electric Sounds’.
The energy in the room bounced off the walls, the band and the audience becoming one. Following with ‘Get High?’, Danko Jones invited Damian Abraham from Fucked Up to sing the final chorus. Swinging the microphone around, Abraham took the stage with aggression, matching his aggressive vocals. He moved ferociously around the stage, ending his appearance by laying on his back, the crowd cheering loudly.
“How are you?” Danko asked into the microphone, the audience erupting in roars. “We’ve been a band for 27 years and it’s always nice to come back and play a hometown show,” he continued, before the band jumped into ‘I’m in a Band’.
“Around the third song i noticed my guitar started going out of tune and I thought, I could either stop to tune it and give you 100% or I could let it slowly go out of tune and give you 75% but also, the best fucking rock show ever” Danko growled into the mic. “So we’re taking the batteries out of the Boss tuner and we’re going to give you the best rock show of your fucking life,” the crowd going wild.
The setlist included an array of fan favorites such as ‘Had Enough’ and ‘My Little RnR’ and new tracks from their brand new album; it had something for new and old fans alike. Singing along from start to finish, it was clear that everyone enjoyed every second of the live and raw rock show. High energy and a strong musical delivery from the band, Danko Jones did not disappoint.
Closing out the night with “Rock Shit Hot”, one of the first tracks released by the band, there wasn’t one person in the room standing still. Waves of energy radiated throughout the room, no one wanting the show to finish. Both bands on the bill delivered top notch performances, giving the audience a night to remember. These Canadian acts are ones you do not want to miss out on, their musicianship strong and captivating.
